Spare Part Production with 3D Printing for Broken Parts
The handle of a discontinued appliance, a connector for an old bicycle, or a machine part broken in the field... When a spare part cannot be found, the alternative is to reproduce the part. 3D printing offers a fast and economical solution at this point.
5 Stages in Spare Part Production
1. Examine the Part and the Broken Area
The function of the part, the load it is subjected to, and the temperature must be determined. Is the cause of the breakage a design flaw or material fatigue? This determination is essential so that the new part does not repeat the same error.
2. Take Measurements
Critical measurements are taken with calipers: hole diameters, shaft distances, wall thickness, and fit tolerances. Instead of scaling by photo, a measured drawing should be preferred; the margin of error directly affects assembly success.
3. Model or Reverse Engineer
Simple parts are remodeled in CAD. For complex geometries, 3D scanning (reverse engineering) can be used. Thickening the breakage area during modeling prevents the recurrence of the same failure.
4. Choose the Right Material
- Static and general-purpose parts: PETG (durable and easy to process).
- Hot environment or outdoor: ASA/ABS (UV and temperature resistance).
- High load and wear: PA or PA-CF (carbon fiber reinforced).
- Flexible seals, feet, and bumpers: TPU.
5. Validate and Produce
View the first print as a "test part"; test the assembly, correct tolerances if necessary, and produce the final part. Adjusting the layer orientation according to the direction where the part will be under the most stress significantly increases strength.
What Should Be Considered?
- In load-bearing parts, layer lines should not be perpendicular to the direction of force.
- Screw threads are weak in direct printing; heat-set threaded inserts are more reliable.
- PLA should not be preferred for parts that will operate in a hot environment.
- If the original part is still under warranty, communicating with the manufacturer is the priority.
At PrintFlow TR, you can submit your spare part request with an STL file and material preference, and evaluate the most suitable offer by comparing multiple production options.
