3D Printing for Architects and Designers: Models and Mock-ups In presentations, a rotating model on screen and a physical model placed on the table do not create the same effect. A physical model directly conveys scale sensation, material texture, and spatial relationships. 3D printing significantly speeds up this process compared to traditional model production. Technology Selection by Model Type - Massing model (massing): Fast and economical FDM printing is sufficient; PLA or matte PETG gives good results. - Detail model: Resin printing is preferred for facade elements, balconies, and fine height differences. - Mock-up and prototype: In product prototypes to be handled, functional parts produced with FDM are more durable. Scale Selection - 1/500 and 1/200: For mass and site relationships; wall thicknesses approach the nozzle limit, careful design is required. - 1/100: The most common presentation scale; floor plans and mass balance are readable. - 1/50 and 1/20: Detail models; resin printing or hybrid technology (FDM body + resin detail) yields better results. Common Mistakes When Going from Design to Print - Thin wall from nozzle diameter: With a 0,4 mm nozzle, walls below 1 mm disappear; at least 1,2 mm should be left for model walls. - Forgetting scale reduction: When the model is reduced from 1/100 to 1/200, details fall below the nozzle limit; geometry should be simplified. - Support marks: Support marks remain on visible surfaces. Orienting the part so supports are not visible or producing it in sections yields a cleaner result. - Forcing a single piece: In large models, producing the model by dividing it into layers reduces both printing time and error risk. - Material color: White provides the most suitable surface for model painting; in colored production, paint adhesion becomes difficult. Small Touches That Increase Presentation Quality - Light sanding and matte filler after printing largely hide layer lines. - Securing models to the base plate prevents breakage during transport. - Sections using transparent or natural (natural) filament for lighting create a good effect. Time and Budget Planning As the presentation date approaches, model production becomes the most critical item. Knowing the production times of the parts in advance makes it easier to decide which part will be printed in resin and which in FDM. With PrintFlow TR, you can get a file-based quote, track production stages, and plan according to the delivery date.
