PLA filament — properties and applications

PLA (polylactic acid) is made from renewable sources such as corn starch and is the most common filament in 3D printing. Its low printing temperature and ease of use make it ideal for beginners.

Key properties

  • Typical printing temperature 190–220 °C, bed 50–60 °C.
  • Low warping tendency; no enclosed chamber required.
  • High stiffness with good surface and detail quality.
  • Low odour while printing.
  • Low heat resistance: softens above roughly 60 °C.

Use cases

  • Decorative objects, models and figures
  • Prototypes and concept models
  • Desktop accessories and toys
  • Educational models and experiment parts

Advantages

  • Easy to print with a wide colour range
  • Widely available and economical
  • Good dimensional stability and detail quality

Limitations

  • Low heat and UV resistance
  • Not suitable for mechanical loads or outdoor use
  • Can be affected by moisture; dry storage recommended

Frequently asked questions

Can PLA be used outdoors?

It is not recommended for outdoor parts exposed to long periods of sun and heat; it deforms above roughly 60 °C.

Is PLA safe in contact with food?

Standard PLA filaments are not food-approved. For food contact, check the manufacturer's relevant certification.

Does PLA need a heated bed?

In most cases a 50–60 °C bed improves first-layer adhesion, though on some printers an unheated bed is sufficient.
